Helados de Ramon

When Enrique and I went to town yesterday, we ended up with about a 2 hour wait before we could finish our last errand of the day, so we decided to go hang out down by the lakeside in San Benito, rather than sit in the middle of noisy, fume-laden, steamy-hot downtown Santa Elena.  As we passed by a couple of houses that have the great good fortune of being located in this scenic spot, I noticed a sign advertising Helados de Ramon.  Helados means Ice Cream.  Anyone who knows me knows that I am a big proponent of using RAMON … I have been talking about its benefits for years, and collecting recipes … but this is the first time I had seen an ice cream made from this nutritious “Maya Nut”.   Of course we had to try it.

We asked to find out how the people are making it, but the young woman who passed it out through the grilled gate said she had no idea.  For Q3.00 (about U.S.$ .40) we each bought one of these little containers of Ramon Ice Cream and walked back down to sit by the lake, overlooking the picturesque island of Flores, and eat it.  It was delicious!
