Volunteers Hayley Stowe & Lea Rodriguez
For the last couple of weeks, Hayley and Lea have been working with Doña Maria Sandoval, a local midwife and cuarandera (healer) who has always used the local herbs and plants as medicines in her healing practice. The two students, Hayley from North Carolina State University and Lea from East Carolina University, under Doña Maria’s tutelage, have been cataloguing as many of the healing plants as possible in this season, along with their curative properties and uses, to ensure that the ancient knowledge is not lost.
