Unificacion Maya 2010: Uaxactun Archeological Site
This year, for the first time ever, the first of the 7 sacred ceremonies that make up Unificacion Maya was held in the pre-classic Mayan site of Uaxactun. This site has a celestial observatory where the sunrise of the solstices and equinoxes is precisely aligned with the three opposite temples. The Unificacion Maya group left El Remate at 4 a.m. to make the 2 hour journey to Uaxactun to witness the daybreak over the temple to the far right before beginning our first Mayan Fire Ceremony.
As the sun comes up over the ancient Mayan astrological site, the Unificacion Maya group file past the temples to the central plaza.
And day breaks!
The tatas and nanas begin setting up the sacred fire.
Tata Mariano prepares the station to the West.
The Fire is prepared. Each day’s fire preparation is different, depending on the energies of the day.
Tata Jose passes the obsidian knife (used as a “talking object”) to Nana Louisa.
Francisca Cruz (from Mexico) was the incense bearer for the ceremonies.
Terry Rubin is not only an excellent translator for the ceremonies, but she is also a very talented musician (voice, flute and guitar).
Tata Pedro creates smoke with natural tobacco to float the prayers to heaven.
Following the ceremony, an excellent lunch was served for the group of over 50 participants at the Compamento Chiclera in Uaxactun.

After lunch, the group wandered off in small groups to explore the ancient city of Uaxactun. We returned to the parking lot at 5 p.m. for the 2-hour return trip to El Remate.
