Scholarship Students
One of the things that I took for granted as a youth was not only the ease of getting a good education, but the idea that it was always expected that we would pursure an education and that there would be no obstacle to us getting whatever level of education that we desired. It is a very very different story here in the jungles, especially for the women. Traditionally, a woman from this area could expect, at the very best, no more than a grade 6 education. While working with them over the last few years, it became obvious that their lack of education was something that affected them deeply.
To make a long story short … through the generosity of a group of supporters, it has become possible to grant Scholarships to 15 women and 1 young man. They are in a range of different grades and academies, from the two women who are beginning grade 1 in an adult education facility in San Benito, to the young women who are in the last leg of their career path. Each and every one of them is very serious about their education and has shown a noticeable increase in self-esteem .. it is an honor for them to wear a school uniform.
