Claudia is our new librarian. Apart from managing the loaning of books to the young readers, she has developed an excellent After-School Program for the Elementary School Children and she organizes and manages the classes in English and French for the Scholarship students.

The Ix-canaan Women’s Group continues with their catering for all the volunteer groups who come to the village. They have a rotating schedule so each of the group of 30 women have a chance to be involved in the cooking. The Ix-canaan Women’s Group also specializes in Square Foot Gardening. They have been together and developing as a group for over 12 years.

Another successful Well-Baby Clinic was held this month. Through these clinics we are identifying the families that need more nutritional support through our Nutrition Program. In this program, the participating families are given some palm tree seedlings and some chaya cuttings and taught how to grow them and use the coconut (water, milk and meat) and the leaves of the chaya plant in their family’s diet.

As Director of the Ix-canaan Dental Clinic, Alex has taken a Dental Outreach Program into all the Elementary and Junior High Schools of the area. Not only do they receive talks and see videos about proper dental care, but each child now keeps a toothbrush at the school for after-meal cleanings.

Ix-canaan Scholarship Students gather for afternoon English classes in the Ix-canaan Library. English is part of the school curriculum here and is important in finding work in a tourist economy, so the students are very happy to have an opportunity to learn how to pronounce the words properly and practice short English conversations with each other.
There are now 26 students receiving scholarships through Project Ix-canaan.

The women of Brisas del Itza Women’s Group are growing, packaging and selling MORINGA (leaf of a small tree) as part of the Nutriton Program here in the village, as well as a source of income. Here they have made bollitos (corn maza with moringa) and a healthy refreshing drink of moringa with lemon.

The clinic under Marvin’s management is busy throughout the day with sick children, diabetics patients and accident victims. Marvin has the best reputation in the area for doing stitches! Thanks to the financial support of 3 Canadian Nurses, he is now attending university and studying to be a Nurse.

After 12 years, the Gardening Program under the guidance of Rose (right) is incredibly popular and the villagers are excited to get seeds and learn how to build a square foot garden and grow their own vegetables.

It has been a four year process but thanks to the diligence of two volunteers who have been working with Project Ix-canaan, the Herbal Remedies book of Doña Maria is finally printed and ready for sale, thus creating a small business opportunity for her and her family here in the village.
