Allison Visits Women’s Groups
This is the fourth time that Allison Haynes has been to El Remate to volunteer with the three women’s groups of the village. Here, she meets with Juana Melendez, president of the Ix-canaan Women’s Group, to discuss the gardening programs that the group is currently involved in.
While waiting the “Bienvenidos Breakfast”, Juana and Saira showed Allison around the gardens of the Ix-canaan Women’s Center. There are some gardens of vegetables, but the emphasis is on the Forest Garden that is now in its 4th year.
The citric trees are all doing well …
Oranges weigh down the branches of the trees … almost ready to harvest …
Juana cut a piece of sugar cane for Allison to try.
The group had prepared bollitos for our breakfast. Bollitos are made from a corn masa with black beans embedded in it … steamed inside of corn leaves … topped with a delicious freshly made tomato sauce and tangy local fresh cheese.
Followed up by Juana’s rapidly-becoming-famous Pineapple Ramon Upside-down Cake.
The group had decorated their center for the “Welcome Breakfast”.
The Ix-canaan Women’s Group is just one of 3 active women’s groups in the village now. They each have their own meetings and agendas, but work together on community gardening projects as well as classes and workshops.
