A Tour of Project Ix-canaan
Welcome to Project Ix-canaan.
On the far left side of the property, on the other side of the playground, is the Ix-canaaan Clinic.
Just inside the green double doors is the main clinic area, used for consultations and treatments. There is no charge for this service, but the people leave a donation if they are able.
The centre section of the clinic building contains a pharmacy (medicines are donated by visiting student groups and medical groups) …..
and a laboratory, fully equipped to do basic tests of blood, urine and faeces. The most frequent test that we do is the blood test to detect diabetes, an illness that is very common here.
The Ix-canaan playground is the only one in the village, and is in daily use by children coming to the library programs, or by children who are with their parents visiting the clinic.
Directly opposite the clinic, on the other side of the playground, is the Ix-canaan Library & Computer Center.
The Ix-canaan Computer Center has 16 functioning computers for use by the 85 students of the I.N.E.D. Academy (the new local high school) and the 75 students of the N.U.F.E.D. Academy (the local junior high school), both of which take their computer classes here.
The back section of the Ix-canaan Library has two large double sided shelving units for the books, puzzles, games and craft materials that is for use with the volunteers to work and play with the 20+ children who come every afternoon to participate in our after-school program.
The Ix-canaan Women’s Center sits high on a hill overlooking Lake Peten Itza. From the back side, you can see the outdoor cooking area to the left (where the fire for the tortillas and the tamale pot are located) and the outdoor prep area on the outside of the left end. The building is large enough for group events and the catering business that this women’s group has become well known for.
This large palapa is also part of the Women’s Center … its round, open-air design is perfect for group meetings and classes.
