Women’s Center
Project Ix-canaan was given a grant to build a Women’s Center on land that the project was holding for that purpose, and after a lot of hard work from local women and volunteers, the home of the Ix-canaan Women’s Group was born. There are now five women’s groups in the village in total, with their own styles, who come together through Project Ix-canaan for joint lessons, events and experiences.
28 women of the village are in the process of developing a food forest and an events center for weddings and parties. They currently cater events and are raising chickens; skills which have been taught and supported by volunteers, giving the women’s groups their own income streams to expand the groups how they see fit.
The Ix-canaan Women’s Group has published a recipe book filled with delicious Mayan meals, snacks and treats; all are made with local ingredients, which are also available internationally, and traditional cooking methods passed down through the generations. Order your copy (print or digital) here by emaling Anne.
The women’s center is always in need of volunteers, including for:
- Gardening
- Composting
- Rocket stove project
- Permaculture
- Catering
- Business advice / management
- Yoga
- Health and wellbeing
