A Guatemala Volun-Tour: 7 Days to Have Fun and Help People

I have had the great pleasure during this past week to hostess a three-person Volun-tour. The volunteers, Mary, Ashley, and Chip arrived early last Saturday morning to begin a week of activities that are planned specifically to benefit the community of El Remate while providing an interesting, educational and entertaining week for the volunteer.

Women’s Group: Rose Lord Returns to Volunteer

Rose Lord has been back again for a three week stint of working with the Women’s Groups of the village. Her first day in town she toured the Ix-canaan Women’s Center with Gloria Mejia, the president of the Ix-canaan group.

Women’s Centre: Thank-you Lunch

After almost a month of working with Sylvie and Lisa, the women’s group each kicked in some money and bought all the ingredients for a thank-you lunch.

Women’s Center: Building an Outdoor Stove

While doing the clean-up on the Women’s Center land, Sylvie and Lisa found a pile of block that had been left over from the original construction, and asked the women what they needed that could be built from block. They immediately said that they needed an outdoor stove that they could use with fire to cook their tortillas and to boil their giant pots of tamales.

Sylvie offered to help with the construction, and pay for the cement and sand for the job. I spoke with my neighbour, Edgar, who works with cement, and he offered to work with the volunteers, showing them the way the local people build a stove.

Women’s Center: Touching-up Around the Plaque

While the women were cleaning out their bodega, they ran across the remains of the paint that was used to originally paint the Women’s Center. The area around the plaque on the front of the building badly needed to be touched up. Sylvie and Lisa took the paint, taped up the plaque, and in no time at all, it looked clean and finished.
