Meet R2D2. She used to be one of 4 parrots, who lived together in the same lemon tree and took turns grooming each other. Now, she is the only one, and has begun spending much more time with us. When Enrique holds her on her perch, she bends her head down and around close to his hand so that he can scratch her neck.
Margo Van der Sluys of Holland has just returned to continue her volunteer work with the kids and women of the village. Margo has been here twice before, for 3 months each time, and she has done lots of volunteer work through the Ix-canaan Library. She arrived with boxes of teaching materials .. and yesterday she brought the first box up to the library. (more…)
When Enrique and I went to town yesterday, we ended up with about a 2 hour wait before we could finish our last errand of the day, so we decided to go hang out down by the lakeside in San Benito, rather than sit in the middle of noisy, fume-laden, steamy-hot downtown Santa Elena. As we passed by a couple of houses that have the great good fortune of being located in this scenic spot, I noticed a sign advertising Helados de Ramon. Helados means Ice Cream. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a big proponent of using RAMON … I have been talking about its benefits for years, and collecting recipes … but this is the first time I had seen an ice cream made from this nutritious “Maya Nut”.
